Why Groom Your Dog at Home?
Regular grooming is essential for your dog's health and comfort. Beyond keeping them looking great, grooming removes loose fur, prevents painful mats, distributes natural oils, and gives you the opportunity to check for lumps, skin issues, or parasites. Learning to groom at home saves money and strengthens your bond.
Essential Grooming Tools
- Slicker brush: Removes loose fur and detangles
- Undercoat rake: Essential for double-coated breeds
- Dog nail clippers or grinder
- Dog shampoo and conditioner
- Ear cleaning solution
- Styptic powder: In case you nick the quick during nail trimming
Step 1: Brushing
Always brush before bathing to remove tangles and loose fur.
Short-coated breeds: Brush weekly with a rubber curry brush.
Long-coated breeds: Daily brushing is ideal. Work in sections from the bottom up.
Double-coated breeds: Use an undercoat rake during shedding season. Never shave double-coated breeds.

Step 2: Bathing
Most dogs need a bath every 4–6 weeks:
- Brush thoroughly before getting wet
- Use lukewarm water — test on your wrist
- Apply dog shampoo and lather from neck to tail
- Rinse thoroughly — leftover shampoo causes skin irritation
- Towel dry, then blow dry on low heat
Step 3: Nail Trimming
Trim every 3–4 weeks. Cut only the clear tip — avoid the pink quick. Reward generously to build positive associations.
Step 4: Ear Cleaning
Check ears weekly; clean when dirty or waxy. Floppy-eared breeds need more frequent cleaning. Signs of infection: odor, redness, dark discharge, head shaking.
Step 5: Teeth Brushing
Use dog-specific toothpaste and aim for daily brushing. For a complete guide to canine dental health, see our Dog Dental Care guide.
With the right tools and a positive approach, home grooming becomes a relaxing routine that benefits both you and your dog.
