Maine Coons are one of the largest domestic cat breeds, often called "gentle giants" for their impressive size and sweet temperament. These intelligent, playful cats have dog-like personalities and often follow their owners around. Their long, luxurious coats, tufted ears, and bushy tails give them a majestic appearance.
Maine Coons are one of the oldest natural breeds in North America, originating in Maine where they were working cats on farms and ships. Many legends surround their origin, including myths about breeding with raccoons (impossible) or being descendants of Marie Antoinette's cats. The breed nearly became extinct in the early 1900s but was revived by dedicated breeders. They were recognized by the CFA in 1976.
