Lovebirds are small parrots known for their strong pair bonds and affectionate behavior. These colorful, energetic birds are named for their tendency to sit close together and preen each other. While they can be kept singly with adequate human interaction, they thrive in pairs and form lifelong bonds with their mates.
Lovebirds are native to Africa and Madagascar, where they live in small flocks. They were first brought to Europe in the 1800s and quickly became popular as cage birds. The name "lovebird" comes from their monogamous pair bonding behavior. Nine species of lovebirds exist, with the Peach-faced, Fischer's, and Masked being the most common in captivity.
