Labrador Retrievers are the most popular dog breed in the United States and many other countries. Known for their friendly, outgoing nature and versatility, Labs excel as family pets, service dogs, search and rescue dogs, and hunting companions. Their even temperament and trainability make them ideal for first-time dog owners.
Despite their name, Labrador Retrievers originated in Newfoundland, Canada, not Labrador. They descended from the St. John's Water Dog and were used by fishermen to retrieve nets and catch fish that escaped from fishing lines. English nobles visiting Canada brought them to England in the 1800s, where they were refined into the breed we know today. The AKC recognized the breed in 1917.
