Betta fish, also known as Siamese Fighting Fish, are among the most popular and colorful freshwater aquarium fish. Males display spectacular flowing fins in vibrant colors. While beautiful and relatively easy to care for, they require proper tank conditions and cannot be housed with other male bettas due to their aggressive nature.
Betta fish are native to the rice paddies and slow-moving waters of Southeast Asia. They were first domesticated in Thailand over 150 years ago for fighting purposes. Selective breeding has created the spectacular colors and fin types we see today. They were introduced to the Western aquarium hobby in the early 1900s and have remained popular ever since.
